18.  This adult second language learner was given the following question:

Question:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People should be polite, no matter what the situation.
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Response:

A prospective manner for every society, politeness is part of most people’s educational training. Most of these people have learned how to speak properly and use titles of address to those in authority. Many cultures teach their participants to use polite behavior as a form of self-control. It should be used even if one is upset. And while historically politeness was seemingly followed, certain modern conversational situations suggest that politeness is not always the best way.

In the past times, such as the middle ages, people lived in a small town for practically all of their lives. A person’s contacts were limited. They knew everyone in the town. Politeness was an important link to keeping one’s relationships established. If you offended someone in the town, everyone would hear about it.

These days, more and more people meet strangers. And societies are changing fast because of computers and advanced technology. The uses of the Internet and modern forms of transportation have made us more informationally and geographically mobile Many of the people that we meet in our daily lives are either by chance or because of some business that we take. We know that we will never see this person again, so it is not as important to be polite toward them. In some cultures, there is a saying in business: “The customer is always right.”

Sometimes, communications between people require more strong opinions. We often express ourselves openly when we disagree or when we become upset by another person’s opinion or behavior. In government, when one party disagrees when the other, they strongly and openly state their opinion. Too much politeness can make a person seem weak and indecisive.

Politeness is still a virtue in modern human relationships. But modern societal changes in the way we speak or act have given us some flexibility. As I pointed out in this essay, we do not always have to use politeness.

Question:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People should be polite, no matter what the situation.
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Response:

First, when you live in any public places such as school, company, club association so on, you should respect older as well as younger people. An older person will admire you and forgive when you make a mistake. Once I worked for a company and I did not properly file some documents. As a result, they became lost. When my boss asked me what happened to the documents, I told him that I had misplaced them. Instead of becoming angry, my boss was polite with me and he and other co-workers helped me to locate the misplaced documents. Despite the mishap, my boss respected my sincerity about the situation. Because of the politeness and respect in my workplace, I felt comfortable working at there. The same is true with younger people, You will not be seen as arrogant if you are polite to them as well.

Moreover, even in severe situaions, a person who uses a polite action can make a bad situation better. For example, in the protest of the Chinese embassy bombing, the U.S.A. government gave a formal apology to China even though this act was an accident. On the other hand, if the U.S.A. government had not shown any remorse for the incident, it would have had many problems between U.S.A. and China. In effect, the US would have seen as rude and glutenous by China.

As you can see, the above effects of polite behavior be positive in our relationships on a personal, professional, and maybe political level.

20.  This adult second language learner was given the following question:

Question:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People should be polite, no matter what the situation.
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Response:

There are many reasons why people should always be polite. First, people always learn polite in the school. Teathers always teach about polite. So people belive to need polite whatever the situatuion. The adults also usally teach polite to their children. In the society, it requires polite, too. Because the society consists of many people, they don’t want to hurt each other.

On the other hand, some people disagree about “people should always be polite, no matter what the situation” because it seems like fault. people have to may emotions: happy, sad, angry, satisfy, upset, shy, etc. So, always polite is hard to all of people.

Although polite is hard to people, it is always need to people, because people are society animals. Ssociety also has been rule for long time. So people have to keep rule. If they break the rule themselves, They aren’t people anymopre. Furthermore, They need polite for protect themselves.

So I belive, polite always need to us. As result we can live more friendly each other.

It is not necessary that people should always be polite, no matter what the situation. For example, a person who has a few friends. These friends are different from each other, so a friends may be very polite, a friends ay very casual and informal. When a person met the polite friend, his behavior will be polite. It is amusse. But, when the person et the casual friend, will his behavor be bolite. maybe not, because in this situation, the casual friends doesn’t want polite from the person.

Question:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
People should be polite, no matter what the situation.
Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Response:

Common to most cultures, politeness is one characteristic of a nice person. I will present two examples about relationship that will show why people should always be polite, no matter what the situation.

Politeness is very important in relationships. You have to be polite and to respect whomever you have the relation with or whomever you meet. First example, a student has to be polite to his/her instructor. Using titles of respect, he/she has to respect him in whatever situation, because if she/he doesn’t, he/she can catch an F or zero on a test or an assignment. At the very least, the student may create a bad impression of himself in front of his instructor. Furthermore, an impolite student has to leave the school and go away.

It is also important to be polite with the people we meet. If you are walking in street, and then you meet a person who do something bad or dishoner to you, you have to be polite because you don’t know this person. If he/she is crazy, he or she might kill you.

Through this two examples, we can understand how being polite, no matter what the situation is one element of peace, security in our relationships.
